Nielsen Digital is part of the same family that does the Nielsen ratings.  You know, when you get the ratings for all your favorite television shows?

That is from Nielson.  They have families install a little box on their television, and it tracks their watching habits.

This is where T.V. ratings come from.  The same company now does the same thing, only it tracks your online habits.

Instead of a box, you download software to your computer, and the software communicates your online habits with Nielsen Digital.

It runs in the background and collects data while you go about your business, never really knowing it is there, other than the fact that you installed it.

First Thing’s First

The website is very straightforward.  They are an established company that is confident in what they do.  Their reputation speaks for itself, so there isn’t a lot of advertising trying to convince you to join.

They simply explain what they do, how it works, and how you will be rewarded.

The simple design and low number of links make it easy to navigate, and the terminology is simple and easy to understand.

The links that are on the Home page are the important ones.  There is a link to the member agreement, the privacy policy, FAQs, and contact information.

It isn’t overwhelming.  You will get exactly the information you need to make an informed decision.

Is Nielsen Safe?

For a lot of people, it is hard to feel safe when you know there is an application on your computer watching everything you do online.

Of course, it is your choice, but really, in this case, it is okay.

Here’s why.

Age

Nielsen has been around for a very long time. In fact, their website states they have been in the media measurement business for over 90 years! Think about how long the Nielsen ratings have been around, right?

People have trusted that little box on their television for generations, so it stands to reason that the same company should be trustworthy to collect similar data on your computer.

The Way it Information is Released

Although it can seem little scary to download software that tracks everything you do online, in reality, the information is closely guarded.

Neilson doesn’t release any individual’s personal information, but rather statistics for groups of people.

For example, general information about groups that you fit into will be released, and your numbers will be a component of that information.

The Reason for Collection

Nielsen isn’t collecting information so that they can sell it to third parties.  That is not how they make money.

Just like no one is interested specifically in what television shows individual families watch, they are not interested in each site you specifically go to online.

The idea is to gather data in an effort compile group statistics. These statistics can help improve the internet so that internet users as a whole get an improved online experience.

By participating with Nielsen Digital Voice, you get to be a part of the change.

History

There hasn’t been any major fiasco related to privacy or protection when it comes to the Neilson software.

How Do They Pay?

This is a little different than the regular surveys for money gig.  You don’t really do anything for Neilson after you download the software.

This being the case, you might imagine that the way they pay is a little different also.

There is no guaranteed payment.  Everyone who has the software on their computer is entered into monthly sweepstakes where they give away $10,000.

That $10,000 is spread out in increments of $25 to $1,000 over 400 winners.

This means that each month 400 people that have the Neilson software running on their computer will win anywhere from $25 to $1,000.

There is no guarantee you will win anything, but since you aren’t really doing anything either, it’s no great loss if you don’t.

If you do win, and people really do win, you have a little extra cash that month.

Winners are notified by email and sent checks in the mail.  Those who have won note that the checks take a while to arrive, but they do come.

So if you get an email that says you won, don’t give up hope!  Give it time.

Increase Your Chances of Winning

They occasionally send survey invitations, and extra entries are awarded to those who complete the surveys.

There is no way to tell how many invitations for surveys you will get, and you may not qualify for all of the ones that land in your inbox.

If you want bonus entries, however, it is better to try as many surveys as you can.

Keep it Installed

The best way to increase your chances of winning is to keep the software installed.  Your odds of winning renew every month you have it installed, meaning everyone has an equal chance to win with each new month.

Just let it ride and see what happens.

What are the Odds?

The odds vary each month based on how many people have the software installed and how many have added extra entries by taking surveys.  Neilson does state, however, that 400 will win each month.

How Do I Get Started?

Go here and sign up.  They will ask you various questions about your household, devices you use, and more.

The next step is to download the software.

It installs quickly, and we didn’t come across any reports of it causing anyone any issues after installation.

After that, you just kind of forget about it.

Do what you do, and if you get an email one month saying you won money, wait for the check to roll in.

Can I Uninstall the Software?

One reviewer noted that they downloaded the software just for the review, and when they were done the uninstalled it.  It was an easy, unobtrusive process.

They later received an email asking them to reinstall, and the company offered $5 if they left it reinstalled for 30 days.  They did as asked and received a check after the 30 days for $5.

This isn’t really noted on their website as policy, so there is no way to tell if it is random or if everyone gets the offer.  It is good to know they followed through with the money though.

Qualifications and Agreements

Anyone downloading the software is expected to meet some basic qualifications and standards.

  • You must be of legal age to enter a binding contract and be the owner of the computer on which you are downloading the application.
  • Be the legal guardian or parent of any minor with access to the computer.
  • You must have informed any individuals with access to the computer that you have agreed to install the software, and have their permission to be part of the panel and subject to the agreement.
  • If you are downloading the application to a work computer, you must have your employer’s permission to do so.

Be sure you have your employer’s permission if you are using the app at work, make sure everyone in your house knows the software is there, and don’t download if children other than your own have regular access to your computer.  That’s not a lot to ask in the grand scheme of things, and it offers protection to you as well as the company.

Is Nielsen Digital a Scam or Legit?

There are, unfortunately, far too many scams out there that thrive on the promises of easy money.  Because Nielsen is basically effortless and involves loading something on to your computer, it is easy to throw them in that “scammer” category.

Remember, scams are fairly easy to spot:

  • Promises that are too good to be true.
  • Require payment or credit card information to participate.
  • Newer company
  • Consistent bad reviews

That is not to say that all new companies are scams, and neither are all companies that have a bad review or two.

However, all of these things are red flags that could indicate a scam.

Nielsen Digital is absolutely legit.  There is no way around the fact that this is an old company with a stellar reputation.  You do not survive 90 years by scamming people.

Not only are there many reviews that verify people actually get paid, but they do not have any of the typical red flags that indicate a scam.

The app is free, easy to install and uninstall, and they make their rewards program very clear and easy to understand.

It is our opinion that this is a great company to work with.  Of course ,you cannot count it as reliable income, but it is a great way to potentially make some extra cash.

If you win in the sweepstakes, you will get the money. Since they send checks, they never have your PayPal information or banking account information.
