The last thing you want to do is grab a gig that pays the same, or less than, what you’re making now, especially if the company will consider you a freelancer or independent contractor.

When you’re an independent contractor, you also have to consider that you’re operating a business.

That means you have to pay taxes on your own, get your own equipment, and fund all the aspects of your business. It takes more money than regular employment, so a low-paying job simply won’t cover your expenses.

Even if a company considers you an employee, you may still be responsible for paying for a separate phone line or better internet service, depending on the job requirements.

Taking all the expenses of working from home into consideration, it’s a good idea to only consider jobs that are at least a few dollars more per hour than you’re making now.

That’s why I put together this list of legitimate $20/hr jobs that will pay you what you’re worth!

Work from Home Jobs That Pay Well (Over $20 an Hour)!

10Up

10Up is a fully remote company that hires web engineers, project managers, and other people in the web development field to work from home.

Along with competitive salaries, some of which go over $80k a year, the company offers an extensive benefits package that includes 401(k) with company matching, a flexible schedule, paid time off, paid parental leave, and more.

A Pass Education

This company offers online teaching and educational services.

You can work from home as an instructor, or one of several other positions the company occasionally has.

Most positions will only require about 2 to 5 hours a day from you, but some positions move over the $20 an hour territory.

Amazon Flex

As an independent contractor with Amazon Flex, you’ll get to create a schedule that works for you while delivering Amazon stuff to customers.

It’s not fully from home, but you become your own boss and get to drive around by yourself without others telling you what to do!

Amazon Flex drivers make between $18 and $25 per hour, with those in large cities earning the most because there’s more demand.

American Journal Experts

American Journal Experts has a host of services for researchers to fine-tune their studies, including writing and editing.

You can hop on board as an independent contractor editor if you have experience in science-related fields.

Salary information online ranges anywhere from $20 to $30 an hour.

Buffer

Buffer is a company focused on upping the social media game of entrepreneurs and businesses.

It has several positions available at any given time, but it’s competitive.

That’s because the company offers a host of benefits that anyone would want, like a new laptop for work, annual company retreats, family leave, and health insurance.

Chegg

Chegg is one of the most popular online tutoring companies for both students and teachers.

As a teacher, you can sign on when you’re available, and Chegg will send waiting students to you.

Tutors start at a rate of $20 an hour with opportunities for increases as you build your reputation. You even get paid weekly!

Class100

Class100 is another online tutoring company. This one specializes in teaching English to non-English speaking students in China.

You’ll be an independent contractor, but you’ll have the benefit of a 6-month contract and a fixed number of classes that work with your schedule.

Class100 has a variety of schedules available, so you can choose one that fits your needs.

Salary ranges from $18 to $22 per hour.

FableLabs

FableLabs is the creator of the game, Tales, a popular app that lets players choose their own adventure with various storylines and endings.

The company occasionally looks for independent contractor writers to help write new storylines for the games (talk about a fun gig!).

The position is called an Interactive Writer, and you can fill out a quick survey to see if you might qualify for the application process.

You’ll get royalties from all your work, which could equal out to well over $20/hour, plus you’ll be eligible for up to $10,000 in advanced cash if you’re accepted.

FormAssembly hires at-home workers to provide chat support to customers.

You’ll need to work a full-time schedule during set hours, so it’s not as flexible as some, but the pay might be worth it to you.

GitHub is a helpful platform for developers to complete and streamline projects.

Healthline Media is the owner of the popular health news website, Healthline.

The site looks for freelance writers to provide in-depth articles and interviews that are backed by research.

You can start with $125 per article, but more technical and longer articles can move up from there, so the salary possibilities are good here.

Instacart gives people a way to work when they’re able to, and it’s flexible. You can even do it with the kids in tow!

With Instacart, you’ll shop for groceries and deliver them to customers.

Or, you can sign up to just be an in-store shopper, which can be good if you don’t have reliable transportation.

You’re not technically working from home, but you work when you want and can be your own boss.

Average hourly wage ranges between $13 and $19, but can go higher if you happen to live in a busy area where there’s a lot of demand.

JustAnswer

Answer questions as an expert in your field for JustAnswer and be in control of your earnings.

When someone asks a question in your area of expertise (which you’ll need to prove with a degree, certification, license, etc.), you’ll get notified.

Answer the question and get paid!

Most questions pay between $2 and $5, depending on their complexity. Answer 4 to 10 questions in an hour, and you’ll earn your $20.

Once you get your first $20, you can request a payment with PayPal.

Magoosh

Magoosh hires text prep experts to work from home providing help to students with questions about standardized tests, like the ACT or GED.

You’ll need a bachelor’s degree and proven experience working with different tests.

You’ll work as an independent contractor and get paid up to $25 an hour if you elect to work on weekends.

Another test prep company, Manhattan Prep seeks remote tutors to teach classes online.

The salary can soar up to over $100 an hour!

Mindswarms

Mindswarms is a “job” that’s really not a job.

Instead, it’s a really fun way to make $50 in a few minutes.

Seriously!

With Mindswarms, you’ll answer a few questions via video. It’s like taking an online survey, only you’ll speak your answers on camera instead of filling them in on a website.

Most surveys won’t take you more than 20 minutes to complete and are only 7 questions long!

nThrive

nThrive hires at-home medical coders who are experienced in the business.

VIPKid

Teachers here make between $14 and $22 an hour, but it seems like more report being at the higher end of that spectrum.

As a Wonder Researcher, you’ll provide the answers to the questions by researching information and statistics and providing the client with everything you found in a formatted document.

The work is thorough, so you’ll need to be efficient at both research and writing to maximize your earnings.

Wonder states that you can make anywhere from $20 to $30 an hour.

The amount you get paid depends on what the client is willing to pay, but you can always decline jobs that don’t pay enough.
