An In-Depth Toluna Review: Should You Believe the Hype?

Toluna is one of the most popular survey sites of the day. Does it live up to the hype? We took an in depth look so you could make the most informed decision possible.

If you have ever spent any time considering online surveys, you have almost certainly heard of Toluna.  That’s no wonder, because they are part of the Toluna Group, which is huge, with over 10 million members across the globe.

It is one of the most popular options out there for getting paid to take surveys.  It turns up in almost every Google search about making money taking surveys, and there is a ton of information on it.

They have been accredited with the Better Business Bureau since 1996, and they have an A+ rating.

Since their file was opened with the BBB, they have had one negative review and 44 complaints.  This is not many over the course of so many years, and each and every one was addressed by the company.

Many of those who complained were awarded extra points for their trouble, even if the mistake was their own fault and not the company’s.

The thing is, some of the information available about Toluna is contradictory.  Before you join, you need to know if it worth it.  We found out for you.

Getting Started

While the sign-up process is fairly straightforward, getting started on Toluna can be a little overwhelming.  It is difficult at first to determine what you are looking at.  Let me help you with that.

Toluna is both a survey site and a community.  At the top of the page, there is a tab for community and a tab for surveys.  When you first get into the site, you are in the community.

Click on surveys, and you will see what surveys are available to you.

When you sign up, you get 500 welcome points.

How to Make Money with Toluna

There are several ways to earn points with Toluna that can be cashed in for prizes or cash.

Surveys

The surveys aren’t any different than the surveys you would take on any other site.  They do have a reputation for trying not to offer you surveys you will be disqualified from taking.

If you are disqualified, they try to offer some consolation.  Usually, it is a few points, but sometimes it is in the form of sweepstakes entries.

You may find that is seems Toluna offers more points per survey than other survey companies, but in reality, they just weight their points differently.

It takes 30,000 points to cash out, which equals $10.  Most surveys take anywhere from 15 to 20 minutes and are worth from 1,500 to 2,000 points each.

There are some worth more points and some worthless, and there are some longer surveys and some shorter ones.

In addition, you can take profile surveys that are worth 100 points each.  These are good because they help ensure you are matched with surveys you are qualified to complete.

Product Testing

This is another way to earn points on Toluna.  I like this was of doing it better than any site I have ever visited looking to test products from home.

When you click on the community tab, you will be given an option for “test products.”  When you click that, you will see what products are currently available to test, how many there are to hand out, and a preview of upcoming test products.

Scroll down a little and you will able to see products that were recently available to test.

Click on a product you want to test, and you will be given 2 or 3 questions that take about 10 seconds to answer.  The process is super quick.

Then watch your email.  If you are chosen, that is how they will let you know.

In order to be chosen, you must first meet criteria set by the brand. This is why they ask those questions when you sign up to test the product.  They need to verify you meet the brand set criteria.

They also note that priority goes to those that are active on the site through surveys and in the community.

You will not be selected for future testing if you have not provided feedback for a product you have already tested.  Of course, you will not be rewarded points for testing a product without providing feedback either.

Content

As part of the Toluna community, you can create content within the community.  These include Topics, Polls, Opinions, Videos, and images.

Topics and opinions are created in an effort to create discussion, as are polls, videos, and images.  You can upload content to “thumb it,” and you can upload images to pit against each other in a “battle.”

Quality content that meets all guidelines may be awarded up to 1,000 points!

Rewards

When you have 30,000 points, you can redeem them for a $10 gift card.  At this level, there are only a few to choose from, but there is a Starbucks card, so that is always good.

If you wait a little longer the options open up a little more.  There are several more $15 cards available, and it only gets better from there.

One drawback for some is that you cannot redeem points for PayPal cash until the $30 mark, and that for cash is 95,000 points.

Yes, this means you points are worth slightly less in cash than gift cards, but it is very slight.

If cash is what you are looking for, it will take you a little longer.

Mobile App

One of the best things about Toluna is that there is a mobile app!  This is not standard in the survey world as of yet, so it is a nice benefit.

It allows you to take surveys and participate in the community on the go.  This means you can earn points while waiting in the school pick up line or at the doctor’s office.

Privacy

Toluna will not share your personal information except what is collected anonymously for the survey.  This does not include contact information, only those things that are needed for the survey itself, or demographic information to qualify for the survey.

Personal contact information is not shared.

Don’t forget, the community is a social media platform. If you willingly share personal information in the community, it is out there.

My Experience

I found the fast sign up process to be a breath of fresh air.  As soon as I got in, I had several surveys available, which was nice.

I tried to take one that was worth 250 points, and after answering a few questions, I was told the quota was filled.  It happens.  It was a very user-friendly survey.

I have found that my email is not overrun with communication from Toluna.  I do get an email each time I have a new survey available, but it isn’t more than a few a week so far.

For some, this would be discouraging.  Remember though, your available surveys are matched as much as possible to your demographics.

To me, a few emails a week is more reasonably what I would be qualified to take based on my information.

If there were a ton more, I would like to be disqualified from many of them.  Spending time answering survey questions only to be disqualified is a waste of time, and time is money.

The emails tell you the survey topic and the amount of points they are worth.  That is helpful, so you do not have to hover over your account or visit it constantly to get that information.

You can make the decision of whether to take that survey without ever going to your account.

Is Toluna Legit or Is it a Scam?

Toluna is the real deal.  It has been around for a long time, and it is part of an even larger and older family in the Toluna Group.

It is safe to sign up and can be a lot of fun.

There are no scam markers.  They award as promised, never ask for payment information, and spam is not an issue.

They are definitely a legit survey company.

Conclusion

To Join or Not to Join

It is easy to get bad information on some really good survey companies.  They are all similar in the way they operate, if someone has expectations that are out of line with reality, they are going to be unhappy.

Very few people are going to write a positive review about earning $10 over the course of a month taking surveys.  Tons of people will write negative reviews about spending tons of time taking surveys and only earning a few dollars a month.

The key to taking surveys to get paid is to remember you aren’t going to get rich, or probably even make a living.

You can, however, make a nice budget buffer if you take surveys on several legitimate survey sites.  I affectionately review to this as my “basket” and the different survey sites are “eggs.”

Toluna is definitely an egg you want in your basket.  The surveys are user-friendly, the company is responsive, and there are fun opportunities to continue earning even if you happen not to have surveys available.
