What is special about being an independent contractor?

Becoming an independent contractor is much different than the daily grind of most people’s 9-5 jobs.

Being an independent contractor allows you the freedom to work when it is convenient for you.

Often times you can choose the days and hours you wish to work. You may find yourself only working a few hours each day, or you could end up working 3 ten hour days each week. It really depends on the work you are contracted for.

As an independent contractor, you are not exactly considered an employee. This simply means that instead of an employer withholding taxes from your check, you are responsible for taking care of your taxes yourself. It sounds scary at first, but once you get the hang of it, you will wonder why you even considered it an issue to begin with.

Independent Contractor Jobs for the Linguist

There are numerous of different kinds of independent contractor jobs you can apply for. To make things a little bit easier for you, I’ve compiled a list of jobs worth looking into. These are some of the top independent contractor jobs for people who have good communication skills on the phone, as well as some computer knowledge.

#1. Yardi Matrix

Yardi Matrix offers surveyor positions to those that have long distance calling plans, and access to high-speed internet.

Tasks include email processing and data entry, and the length of each job could last anywhere from 2 to 12 weeks.

If you have a calling to make a difference in the lives of others, this is definitely a place you want to submit your information!

#3. MarketLinc

MarketLinc is great for those looking for more of a full-time gig, as you are required to work at least four shifts per week. Two of those shifts must be during evening hours, and weekend shifts are also part of the requirement.

As a computer solutions sales agent, you will be receiving phone calls and chat requests, as well as processing customers’ orders. You must be able to maintain professionalism while remaining positive and poised during stressful instances.

What is super great about MarketLinc is that there is room for advancement, should you decide you enjoy the path. As full-time positions open up, they frequently advance part-timers, rather than looking externally.

#4. NexRep

Once passing a background check, NexRep may hire you to become a virtual, independent customer service agent. Their customer service agents take inbound calls, as well as make outbound calls, or are even knowledgeable in technical support.

One of the best things about NexRep is that they will certify you within 2 weeks. Certification takes place either through webinars, or emails.

Another thing that I love about NexRep is that the hours you can work are completely flexible! While you need to work a minimum of 15 hours each week, you can choose the hours you want to work, as long as you complete at least 2 consecutive hours at a time. This is great news for those who frequently have appointments midday, as they are super easy to work around!

Additional Independent Contractor Work from Home

Another great thing about being an independent contractor is that you can work in the comfort of your very own home. There is no need to bundle up on those freezing cold mornings, and you certainly don’t have dress up in a suit and tie on sweltering hot days.

The following are links to help you find work from home writing jobs, as an independent contractor.

#6. ClearVoice

As an independent contractor, ClearVoice is one of my favorite places for freelance writing.

First of all, you choose your own rate of pay, and are matched only with clients who are willing to pay what you charge.

Second, you don’t have to write articles on topics that you are not interested in. ClearVoice helps match you to articles that are more your style. So if there are certain things that you just aren’t comfortable writing about, you won’t have to!

Lastly, if you happen upon a client who enjoys your writing style and punctuality, in particular, they have the option to direct more work your direction. So you may not even have to search through opportunities to apply for, as they will get handed directly to you!

#7. Scripted.com

Scripted.com has clients who are in search of freelance writers to help them with a variety of different writing tasks. These tasks include social media updates, blog posts, and general articles.

The sign-up process is fairly painless, however, not everyone who applies will get contracted out.

If you are accepted, note that you cannot just start claiming anything and everything. There are particular topics that you should be knowledgeable about, and will be asked to write about.

Loreal, Linkedin, and Eventbrite are just a few of the big name companies who use Scripted freelance writers. How cool would it be to write for any one of them?

#8. BlogMutt/Verblio

If you enjoy writing blog posts, you better head over to Verblio, formerly known as BlogMutt, and submit an application.

BlogMutt operates by providing information on their customers. This information includes the length of posts they generally prefer, as well as other info about what kind of posts they are looking for, and certain phrases or keywords. You will even have access to their blog, which will give you an idea of what they are looking for in their posts.

Another nice fact about BlogMutt is that you can earn points for each post that is written and/or published. The pay rate begins at about $8 per post, and gradually increases, as you post and earn more points, allowing you to level up.

#9. dotdash

Writing for dotdash is widely known to be a freelance writer’s dream job!

Initial starting pay for dotdash is about $675 per month, however, with each view, your page has, the more incentive you will receive. After about two years of writing for them, you can expect to average about $2,000 each month, for roughly 10-15 hours of work, per week. It sounds pretty amazing, huh?

One thing to note before you apply, is that you will be applying under a topic that you should be experienced in. You must have previously published articles on the topic, that show that you are competent, and truly skilled in the topic.

What better way is there to make money from something that you are passionate about?

#10. Connections Academy

If you have a college degree, and a background in education, you may just find Connections Academy to be just the gig you are looking for.

Connections Academy is frequently hiring independent contractors to become assessment writers for particular subjects.

Best of all, you get paid per piece, so can take on as many, or as few projects as you have time for.

General Independent Contractor Jobs

If you don’t necessarily have your heart set on a particular line of work, you may find these general independent contractor jobs to be a little more up your alley.

#11. Time ETC

If you are looking for something a little more long term, take a look at Time etc. Time etc. is looking for contractors that have availability for an entire year, minimum. You will be contracted out to become a virtual assistant, with tasks like moderating, making travel arrangements, and blogging.

Because this is a work from home job, it is a prerequisite that you have experience working from home, and you must also be available to work Monday through Friday, for at least 5 hours each week.

I loved how easy it was to sign up to become a virtual assistant through Time etc., but my absolutely favorite thing about the site is that it allows me to delegate my duties to another virtual assistant. Sometimes life happens, and when it does, I need to know that the work will still get completed, as promised.

#12. Fancy Hands

If you enjoy doing small tasks, like making appointments, taking calls, and data entry, Fancy Hands may be the right job for you!

Fancy Hands hires virtual assistants to complete fairly minor tasks. Pending on the task at hand, the pay can range from about $2.50 to $7 per task.

I particularly enjoy being contracted for Fancy Hands because the tasks are quick, and easy. Anytime I need a little extra spending money, or have some free time, I simply scroll through for tasks to complete.

#13. Belay

Previously known as eaHELP, Belay is a Christian based company, that contracts people independently to be virtual assistants, webmasters, and bookkeepers.

Belay looks for contractors that are capable of taking on multiple tasks at once, while being accepting of changing environments.

As a virtual assistant, you can expect to work with one to two clients at a time. Duties for each client could include a variety of tasks from screening and forwarding mail, to travel and event planning.

One of the wonderful things about Belay is that they are very family oriented. While you are expected to be available during normal business hours, there is plenty of room for flexibility. This may just be the perfect job for stay at home moms and dads, who are looking for a little extra income.

#14. Crisp

If you are okay with getting paid bi-weekly, and are familiar with various social media platforms, you should inquire about being contracted with Crisp. Crisp is a social media monitoring site.

Moderating for Crisp could include liking comments, sending tweets, and responding to customers via social media platforms.

#15 LionBridge

LionBridge offers multiple independent contractor jobs. The most popular job is the internet assessor job, most likely because you do not need a college degree.

As an internet assessor, you will pretty much be rating the results of internet search engines.

Think about how many times you have searched for something and didn’t get the answer you were hoping for. You are already basically rating it poorly in your mind. Why not get paid to actually rate the search engine?
